OJSThe Olympia Jazz Senators have become the premier big band in the South Puget Sound area. Established in 2005 by Mr. Norm Wallen, this band performs a variety of big band instrumental and vocal music from the 1940's to the writings of today's top arrangers with Tom Kubis and Gordon Goodwin. You'll hear great charts from the Buddy Rich Orchestra to Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, The Andrew Sisters to Frank Sinatra, Pat Metheny to Steely Dan.
In addition to performing throughout the greater South Sound area, we conduct outreach to local high school jazz programs. Many members are Band Directors in High School and Jr. High school music programs. Other members are former or current military musicians to include the U.S. Navy, Army, and Air Force Bands. The roster is filled out with other top musicians in this area making a powerful yet sensitive ensemble you won't want to miss!
Director Tracey D. Hooker is a Grammy Award winning musician from South Puget Sound and author of Autobiography Of An Unknown Jazz Trumpeter. He currently serves as Band Director for the Nova School of highly capable students, along with directing the Olympia Jazz Senators since November 2015. Tracey is a graduate of Regents College (SUNY) and a 22 year veteran of the United States Navy Music Program. In addition, he serves as Trumpet Instructor at both the Olympic and Gray Harbors Colleges. Mr. Hooker has performed with many touring bands such as the O'Jays, Temptations, Franki Valli, Solomon Burke, to name a few.
Locally he performs with Freddy Pink (70's cover band), Life Center Church Orchestra, Purple Phoenix Orchestra, the Keith Henson Octet and his own quartet, the popular Hook Me Up Band. Tracey maintains a Trumpet Studio out of his home where he guides and develops tomorrows fine musicians.
